US Patent 7,231,330

A wireless and RF emulator that is capable of recreating “Drive Test” environments. This IP facilitates the development and testing of mobile phones.  The ‘330 Ppatent enables phone and mobile application designers to recreate an RF and infrastructure conditions found in 3G/4G deployments .

Main Features found in the patent also in the ETSI Specification for 3GPP/LTE and others:

  • Fading and terrain emulation (PDF)
  • Networking simulation at different delays and bandwidths
  • Automated tools for testing and validation of mobile, audio applications, and performance of new mobility protocols

Standard Specifications

ETSIThe ‘330 Patent reads on The ETSI World Class Standard for 3GPP :

  • 3GPP/ETSI 136 508, (PDF)
  • 3GPP/ETSI TS 36 141 (PDF) and others related to testing the UT (Unit under Test)
    • A list of test cases are shown 8.2.1, 8.2.2, 8.2.3, 8.2.4, and many others
  • ETSI 137 976  (PDF) showing the work plan for MIMO OTA Testing and Fading
    • As such, MIMO throughput is defined as f function of Transmitted TBS and Number of ACKS divided by time.
    • SNR also provides a way to bested with AWGN and no fading
    • Testing of MIMO handset under co-channel interference  SNR = P/Pi  where Pi is the interference
    • The components of the solution presented in the ETSI 137 97 specification are:
      • An Anechoic Chamber
      • System Simulator (Network Emulator)
      • N channel RF emulator with OTA channel generation Features
      • N antenna elements connected
      • Channel model for each case as per specification

Key Concepts in the ‘330 Patent

  • Wirelessly Communicates, as ruled by Judge More, Wireless Means without Wires and hence the patent applies under the presence or use of radiated tests. Radiated tests are crucial for MIMO Testing. However, conducted testing can be shown to be equivalent to radiated testing in most cases.
  • By changing the RSSI parameters, signal strength as a function of Path Loss or Log(x) of the power received by the mobile terminal. This can be emulated in many ways as used in 3GPP in wheat’s called Emulation Profile (html)
  • The patent covers playback of RSSI database with fading models that may also include BER (Bit Error Rate) values to simulate propagation and RSSI changes for the mobile terminal plus a particle fading profile
  • Emulation of a back end network that uses IP-based or Packet Data communications where registration using Mobile IP or a similar protocol is used to initiate a mobile terminal.
  • Playback of RSSI is widely used in the industry while conducting MT and MO calls.
  • The tests used by the patent are NOT related to Total Radiated Power (although you may test it as well) or other similar Antenna-only tests. The emulator is design to test performance during “DRIVE TESTING” conditions

US Patents 7,697,508 and 8,213,417

A wireless protocol that enables proxy mobility (as on LMA/MAG) assisted with location-based information (GPS) to trigger allocation of resources for handover or tunnels (GTP or PMIP) for data communication protocols.  This patent covers LTE and X2 Handovers and several mobility conditions found in the ETSI Specification for LTE.

Standard Specifications

ETSIThe following ETSI /3GPP Technical Specifications are covered by these patents:

  • 3GPP ETSI 23 402 (html)
  • 3GPP and ETSI 23 401 (html) and Tutorial (PDF)
  • ETSI 129 275 (PDF)
  • ETSI 136 400 (PDF),
  • ETSI 136 423 (X2 Handover) (PDF) and others.

The ‘508 and ‘417 patents are used in 3G/4G deployments where an MME entity tracks the mobile terminal and assists in the handover and resource allocation handled by the LMA or the MAG, or any proxy entity that acts on behalf of the phone or tablet in the 4G network.

MOBILE IPP X2 HANDOVER

Key Concepts in the ‘508 and ‘417 Patents that read on 3GPP/LTE Specifications:

  • Registration mechanism and creation of IP tunnels
  • Use of entities to act on behalf of the mobile node in the infrastruture
  • Use of entities to announce (e.g. ICMP) potential handover points or foreign agents
  • Use of proactive allocation of resources to enable handover
  • Assistance by location-based services (e.g. MME) in the process of handover
  • Transfer of UE state from one Base Station to the next
